What Rough Beast, By S. M.
Hall, III. This is an unusual collection of well crafted poetry. It is excellent work. The author creates an entire poet, (The great Irish poet/genius Sean O'Shawn) and traces his development as a great poet from the early years, when he thought every poem had to start with Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, into a great lyric poet who dies in 1970. It is clear that Hall is having a great deal of fun here. You will too as you enjoy the creation with him. Paperback (ISBN 0-89002-360-3) $13.95. CD Hall reading his poems, $13.95. | Soft Target: The Air, By Joel Narlock. Perhaps the most important novel to be published this year. This one shows how one trerrorist with an entomopter (GOOGLE IT UP, IT'S A REAL DEVICE) can bring down commercial airliners without a clue, with no danger to himself. How long does it take to have the skies shut down? What would be the ramifications of that? Would that bankrupt the country? Exactly what does that mean? Is there a defense? We're facing a real problem here. Read it, then you tell our officials what can be done to prevent it? 300 pp paperback (ISBN078-0=89754-226-5) $18.95
Hardcover ISBN 978-0-8754-227-2) $39.95
Name The Boy, By Shawn Kerivan. A Vermont InnKeeper has a great collection of short stories. All about the growing up of boys. You'll lover these, you'll relate. paperback (ISBN 978-0-89754-228-9) $16.95
A Dysfunctional Afterlife By Jason Hravda I bet you thought Heaven would be perfect. Everything running just right. This novel suggests it might not be like that. It's funny, certainly not meant to be considered seriously, but the angels and the keepers of heaven are about as imperfect and inept as we are. Only Jesus is perfect and he's very hard to reach. An enjoyable book, very well written.

Jungle Rules by Gaz Crittenden. A novel of Viet Nam by one who was there. Fiction (to protect the innocent as well as the not so...) This novel is a study in the de-humanizing of soldiers in war time. A worthwhile read and a best seller for 2006. This book will make you think, and you may not like what it makes you think.

Double Daggers by James R. Clifford. Already into second printing. Rather than have me tell you about the book, let an unbiased 3rd party do it. Review appeared in the June isue of Midwest Book Review, by James A Cox.
"Double Daggers is about four men separated in time but unitedf in their ambitions to posses the Ides of March coin minted by Brutus in celebration of Caeser's death: Marcus Brutus himslf, a crusading knight of medieval Europe, an SS lieutenant of Hitler's, and a modern day Wall Street trader. Creatively presenting the devilish intentions and pursuits of the four lead characters and their intertwining fates of the four sbooks. Double Daggers is a riveting historical interpretation of the great mythical powers of the legendary Roman coin. Benefiting from the author's historical research and vividly acute concepts drawn from the rule of the Roman, Crusading, Nazi, and modern eras. Double Daggers is very strongly recommended as a complex, superbly crafted, thoroughly entertaining novel from beginning to end."

2040 a novel by Brink Hudlee. What's our world going to be like in 2040? Hudlee knows and tells us all about it in this novel. We have world government, population control, no terrorism, little crime (virtually no unpunished crime), because everyone is implanted with a micro-chip at birth so big brother always knows where you are and essentially what you are doing. If you're over 65 you don't get medicine. What a world! have a peak, and then go out and vote against every person now in office. Paperback (0-89754-211-8) $16.95. Hardcover (ISBN 0-89754-212-6) $39.95
Courage, Confidence & Silence. By Judy Woods-Knight. A fictionalized life of a Philadelphia woman of priviledge who marries, has five children, then becomes a nun. She creates an order, a school, and has been venerated by the church. The author is on a mission to see Cornelia Peacock Connelly become a saint. This is a fascinating study of a fascinating woman who had to fight her church to do what was right, and did not necessarily follow the third beat of her mantra. To read it is to love her, no matter your religion (or lack thereof). paperback (ISBN 0-89754-209-6) $15.95. hardcover (ISBN 0-89754-210-X) $39.95
The Rat Catcher a novel by Andrew Laszlo. There's a serial killer about. 20 dead and counting. The victims are all perpetrators of the holocaust who either received no punishment or only a slap on the wrist for their horrid deeds. The Rat is out to get them (and does, 25 in all) and The Rat Catcher is out to get The Rat. (He doesn't, and doesn't really care.)
A super Hungarian sleuth teems up with a retiring New York PD Dectective and they chase The Rat over three continents before the trail ends in Hungary with the final murder. The murders are gruesome, befitting the crimes of the holocaust perpetrators. At least so far as The Rat is concerned.
Andrew Laszlo is a Hungarian emigrant (1947) who rose to prominence as a cinematographer (Shogun is perhaps his most famous credit) and he knows how to paint a scene with words as well as with camera. A fascinating who-dun-it, very well told. Paperback (ISBN 0-89754-203-7) $16.95 Dustjacketed hardcover (ISBN 0-89754-206-1) $39.95
The Lutheran By Jack Britton Sullivan. An early Western. This takes place in the very early nineteenth centruy and is probably the most unusual western you'll ever read. Not a typical shoot-em-up good-guy-in-white-hat-wins but a more realistic display of the brutality that exists where there is no law.
The Lutheran is an anti-hero, and the most complete expression of evil in American Letters. He will haunt your dreams and live in your memory forever. You'll never cheer for him, you will find not one iota of good. You will find an obscene fascination with his character.
Paperback (ISBN 0-89754-204-5) $16.95 Hardcover with dust jacket $39.95.
Blackbeard's Gift a novel by James R. Clifford. Here's a novel that features a fictional (could've happened) adventure of an early Charleston colonizer. The hero flees England with a price on his head. He was honest and sought to expose a corrupt capitalist and was to be rewarded with a slit throat. But he managed to escape and made his way to Charleston where he tried to build a new life. He was Shanghaied by Edward Teach (Blackbeard, the pirate) and forceed to live for a while as a pirate. Eventually Blackbeard gave him his freedom just before he was killed in his final battle. He also bestowed much of his ill-gotten booty on John Rutherford, who after dealing with his assasin in a dual, lived happily ever after as one of the giants of colonial Charleston. A great adventure tale, well told. Paperback (ISBN 0-89754-199-5) $16.95, Hardcover with dust jacket (ISBN 0-89754-201-0) $39.95.
In The Rivers' Flow a novel by Jim Ainsworth. This is a well done novel set in Rural NE Texas in the fifties. Watch young Jake Rivers learn about life through drought ridden poverty stricken farm country. The struggle is real, is only winnable by survival. The struggle is both relieved and made more intense through little league baseball. Any country boy raised in the 50?s (that?s me) will strongly relate. For the rest of you, its fabulous history, well told, of the era of your parents and grandparents. Don't miss this. Hardcover with dustjacket (ISBN 0-89754-197-9) $39.95. Paperback ISBN 0-89754-196-0) 2ND EDITION, 2005 $18.95.

In
The Shadow of Trees
By Michael Schultz
This is a
fictional account of one CCC camp in Northwest Pennsylvania. Schultz
weaves a great story, a story that reads like an eye-witness account.
It is fiction and the characters are real. The story is by someone
who was there (he wasn't) and while pure fiction, the events were
real.
The Civilian Conservation Corps
was part of FDR's New Deal, and this "make work" program
has been benefitting all of us who leave city streets for recreation
for a very long time. The built roads, fought fires, built trails,
worked in National Parks. Their work has survived, but the memory
of the CCC and the camps is fast-becoming forgotten history.
Paperback ISBN 0-89754-138-3 $15.95

The
Betheaden Road
By Sheldon Webster.
The southern writer
picks up where Faulkner left off. His characters are as vivid, his
stories as real. This book deals with events and characters from the
50s to the 90s. This is a collection of related stories presented
by a great story teller. This one will even compete with the TV.

Moses
Rose
By William Rainbolt
Moses Rose is a novel
based on history. Louis "Moses" Rose is the legendary lone
Alamo survivor/deserter. Scholars continue to debate whether or not
Rose lived, and whether or not he was actually at the Alamo. It doesn't
matter, as most of what we think we know about the battle comes from
someone who apparently said he was Louis Rose. Rainbolt's book, laced
with factual events, is fiction. It is not history. Call it Texas
fiction-of-1836 by a Texan.

Adventures
in Spacetime
By Derrick Neill
Science fiction at
its best. Neill uses the age-old battleground of good vs. evil, and
after a horrendous struggle that pits alien against aline in the company
of a couple of Americna teenagers. Good wins. This is not a highly
technical science fiction piece, it simply uses science fiction to
create a fanciful fast-paced story or victory over evil.

Echo
From Salem
By Mona Esty Worsencroft
Our author
is a direct descendent of one of the hanged witches. Whether thorugh
heredity, or something else, she delivers what amounts to an eye-witness
account of what happened in Salem, Mass. in the late 17th century.

any of 'em. Ms. Worsencroft has given us the most literate account.
Read her book, you will experience screaming rage (your own) and get
some insight into modern witch-hunts.

The
Claithtown Murders
By Nora J. Hamilton
The grisliest of deeds often
have the most tender motives. This book is set in Ireland and will
appeal to anyone who loves a good murder mystery.
Nora J. Hamilton spins
a great yarn that keeps us in suspense until the end. No explicit
sex or gratuitious violence mar the presentation of a story that
presents a great challenge. This book may be especially appropriate
for the teen-aged reader.

A Journey Of Innocents
By Stephen M. Janasik
1212 Stephen of Cloyes had
a vision from God. God told him to organize a crusade of Children
to retake the Holy Land for Christendom. The children were
to use only their innocence and purity to win back the Holy Land.
Some 45,000 children of
France and Germany (there was also a German Crusade) left their
homes to join the crusade. Most were never heard from again. Death
took many on the long march. Survivors were sold into slavery.
The crusade happened. Janasik
spent three years researching the era, and gives us a believable
account of plot and circmstance by following the crusade through
the activites of a small group of the crusaders. We ultimately hope,
suffer and despair with the characters.
This is a must read for
history buffs and those interested in the ongoing saga of "man's
inhumanity toward man."
