Dan River Anthology, 2007

  • You are not required to buy a copy!
  • We pay a non-refundable cash advance on acceptance and offer opportunities to earn more.
  • The anthology is not overpriced and is actually sold (Multiple Copy Discounts up to 50%).
  • Nothing is required of the author except proofing his/her own galleys, but while not required, some marketing help is expected. Closet writers need not submit.
  • Listed in the top 50 fiction markets in the land by Writer's Digest.

GUIDELINES

  • Manuscript should be submitted on disk with accompanying hard copy.
  • Guidelines for typing on disk, (hardcopy can be about any easy to read format.) Do not justify type. Do not double space. Do titles in traditional upper and lower case. (Not all caps). Do not indent paragraphs. If I catch these right away I'll just return with the note "Please re-submit as per guidelines." If I don't catch them on receipt, they will be rejected when read. If you can't put ms on disk we'll do it for you, but you can probably get it done cheaper there.
  • Deadline is March 31.  We accept or reject work by May 30 and send proofs by June 30. Assuming all proofs returned in 24 hours the book is mailed by the first of December. (The '06 was mailed in October, but don't count on it happening again.)
  • There is a reading fee of $1 per poem and $3 per 2,500 words, or any part, of fiction. Reading fee must be paid in cash, no checks, no money orders, no credit cards.  (I don't know how to say that more clearly. Checks are NOT cash. The reading fee goes directly to the first reader of your work, the company gets none of it and bookkeeping such small amounts would be impractical, and costly. The reading fee serves two purposes. First it holds down the number of submissions to a level we can actually read. Second, it allows us to pay readers I can't convince to work free.
  • #10 SASE if you want your work returned. Others if you want acknowledgement or other correspondence. Do not use small or social size SASEs for anything.
  • Paperbacks sell for $16.95 and are subject to Multiple copy discounts: 1- 4 copies none 5 to 25 copies, 2% per book ordered. 25 or more 50%. Plus 10% to CAL members. Last year, 184 pages.
  • Hardcovers sell for $39.95 and are subject to multiple copy discounts: 1-4 copies none 5-10 copies 2% per book 10-149 copies 20%. 150 or more copies 40%. CAL member discounts of 10% also apply. Normally only as many hardcovers as are sold are produced. Almost always fewer than 50. Last year we produced 22. Hardcovers come with full color dust jacket.
  • The only possible charge to authors is for Author's Alterations. (AA) If you change something from your original you will be billed at $52 per hour with a $25 minimum. Any change, even a comma to a period, will activate the charge. Proofreading after typesetting can be expensive. Of course all errors that we make are corrected without charge of any kind. But errors missed in a first reading and caught in a second are changes.
  • The Dan River Anthology, 2008 will feature a full color cover and professional production, our books are beautiful.
  • Order a recent copy, ($16.95 plus $3.50 shipping) see what we're like, then submit if you like what you see. Order from our bookstore. Phone works great for CC orders.
