Northwoods Press
the poet's press

Northwoods Press was created in Bigfork, Minnesota in 1972.

Modern technology allows us to publish more books of poetry.

Any excellent poet with even a very small following (but you nust have some following) may be able to have her/his book published with royalty contract.  We may actually be able to publish with as few as about 65 advance sales of hardcover with CD.

Over the years the company has changed and evolved. Currently it publishes poetry,  local and family histories, and plays.  Northwoods Press is available to academia for custom publishing books for classroom use under its University Press division.  Northwoods Press provides a companion CD for every book published. The CD is usually recorded by the author and may/should include readings, and/or other comment deemed appropriate by author and publisher.  Northwoods Press seeks to acquire three poetry books per year . Northwoods Press can not receive subsidy from authors.

The University Press division requires advance sales of only  80 copies. Smaller books, such as chapbooks, usually require fewer. Books for classroom use are limited to poetry and related themes, to plays,  and to local histories.

Before considering a ms. for publication, we must have a personal marketing plan that will show us how and where we are going to get enough advance sales to fund publication. We don't have time to read mss. unless we're pretty certain that funding is possible. Typically, it takes only $3.250 to publish your book in paperback, hardcover, and CD. Most poets start with their personal mailing list and expand outward from there. Our only other method of funding is through earmarked donations, but the author may not donate. Cover design is by the author, full color is expected.

Poetry is only sold through the direct and personal influence of the poet. (If you know another way, do share it, I'll make you a millionair within twelve months.)

Northwoods Press pays royalties of 10% of amount received of first 2,500 copies, 15% thereafter. Royalties are paid each March for prior year, and/or on request.

American History Press, a division of Northwoods Press, publishes histories, including family and church histories, and geneology. Need a fund raiser? Church histories are a great idea.

We provide bar codes, a listing in Books In Print, Small Press record of books in print, the copyright, and so forth.
Books of 104 pages or larger are produced in hardcover, paperback, and CD.
Books are promoted to libraries, bookstores, individual poetry buyers, and areas where the author has influence.
We don't accept simultaneous submissions, e-mail submissions, or previously published material.
Include #10 or larger SASE for return of material, plus #10 SASE for receipt confirmation or for other correspondence. Writers who are interested in submitting to Northwoods Press should check out our current offerings.

Submit on disk in (.rtf) with accompanying hard copy. Put your name on everything, things get separated.

Northwoods Press  considers work from all. Membership in the Conservatory of American Letters  will be required of accepted authors. Members always  receive preference when all else is equal, as we seek to support those who support us.
